An Open Letter to Meta: Bring Back the Digital “Press 0” for Business Support
Technology should remove operational friction for your advertisers, not eliminate the people responsible for fixing it.
To the teams building Meta Business Support:
We are writing as business partners who fund the Meta ecosystem every month—not because advertising is easy, but because that is where our customers are. When support fails, we do not need another chatbot script. We need accountability, escalation, and a human being who can intervene when automation breaks down.
The Reality of the AI Trap
Meta’s current automated support systems are creating a dangerous bottleneck for small businesses and advertisers. While AI handles routine queries efficiently, it creates a prison when software bugs occur.
When a bug exists inside the very system meant to report bugs, the AI workflow breaks down completely. The system stops trying to solve the user’s problem and focuses solely on completing a predefined, broken script.
That is not customer service. That is a loop with no exit.
The Need for a Human Escape Hatch
For decades, automated phone systems maintained an essential safety valve: the ability to press zero or request a representative to override the automation.
Meta has quietly removed this escape hatch.
When your AI support misunderstands a user or encounters a system error, it leaves business owners with:
- No support ticket generation
- No functional email addresses
- No direct telephone numbers
- No human appeal process
We experienced this firsthand while trying to fix a Facebook Page—trapped for more than two hours inside a support maze with no human on the other end. Read the full story.
Our Call to Action for Meta
As business partners who fund the Meta ecosystem, we demand a return to accountable customer service design. We call on Meta to implement the following changes:
Implement a Digital “Press 0”
Provide an immediate, visible option to bypass the AI chatbot and connect with a human representative when an automated loop fails.
Decouple Bug Reporting
Ensure that reporting a technical issue does not require navigating the exact software infrastructure that is broken.
Prioritize Human Accountability
Design AI tools to bridge the gap between people, rather than using technology as a shield to deflect human interaction.
Why This Matters
This is not an argument against AI. It is an argument for responsible design.
The best systems handle routine questions quickly—and immediately recognize when a person needs another person. That is not weakness. That is good design.
Technology should remove operational friction for your advertisers, not eliminate the people responsible for fixing it.
