We Were All Born Curious
Before we learned to read… before multiplication tables. Before homework. Before grades.
We learned one word: Why?
Children ask hundreds of questions every day. Why is the sky blue? Why can't fish breathe air? Why do leaves fall? Why do grown-ups drink coffee?
Somewhere along the way, many of us stop asking. Not because curiosity disappears. Because life gets busy. School gets serious. Work gets practical.
Wonder quietly moves into the background. But every now and then, someone reminds us that curiosity was never gone. It was simply waiting for an invitation.
Teachers do that. The best ones always have.
Oops! Mom
Oops! Mom—the predecessor to GoldMIND—didn't begin as a business plan. It began with a simple realization: sometimes the best learning happens when things go wrong.
Black-and-white photographic paper a bit overexposed—and a bit underexposed. An LED glowing too dim because it was underpowered, or burnt out because we forgot to wire in the resistor.
Saying, “Oops…” has a deligthful way of turning around a moment. Instead of treating something as a failure, one can view it as a sticky ledge (a checkpoint for those of us raised on Sonic) where we can put what we learned not to do.
What if mistakes weren't interruptions to learning? What if they were the learning? That idea became Oops! Mom.
Oops! Mom shipped 35 of 70 prototype kits off to their new homes just before Valentine's Day 2024. Valentine's is our favorite “catch-up” holiday—if you miss getting it under the tree in December, you still have breathing room and standard shipping fees until mid-February. And then we waited for feedback.
But a bigger question persisted: who taught the teachers to create these magical moments?
The answer: thousands of other teachers. Decades of experimentation. Millions of tiny “Oops…” moments.
The Classroom Became Electric
The best days were never perfectly scripted. They were joyful expeditions fueled by equal parts preparation, curiosity, and trust. The teacher had a destination in mind, but the children often discovered a better path. Every unexpected question became a trail marker. Every “Oops!” revealed something new—not just about the subject, but about the wonderfully different ways children make sense of the world.
Every teacher knows the feeling. It usually begins with one unexpected question. A student notices something no one else noticed. Another disagrees. Someone blurts out an idea that sounds completely impossible. The room gets louder. Hands shoot into the air.
Children start talking over one another—not because they're distracted, but because they're desperate to share what they've just discovered. The lesson plan quietly slides into the background.
Curiosity takes over. That's the moment every great teacher hopes for. Not control. Not silence. Not perfect behavior. Something better. The moment when the classroom becomes electric.
Meet Anne
“Oh, wait until you hear this one…” That's how Anne told stories.
Years after leaving the classroom, she still lit up when she talked about her favorite lessons. Not because they matched a curriculum map. Not because they came with beautiful worksheets. She remembered them because of what happened between a teacher and a room full of curious children.
She remembered the confusion. The looks—and then the laughter. And the glorious “Aha!” moments.

Robots Only Do What They Are Told
One of Anne's favorites began with blue painter's tape. Soon the classroom floor became a giant mission grid. Students formed teams. Every team chose a Robot, a Computer, and a crew of Programmers.
The Robot wore a wonderfully silly hat. The Computer got a megaphone. Hidden mission cards revealed walls of fire, floors of lava, bug obstacles and objectives that had to be completed - but only the programmers could see them.
Chaos followed. Wonderful, educational chaos. The programmers had to invent a language. The Computer had to translate it. The Robot could only follow instructions exactly as they were given..
The Robot followed every command exactly as spoken. No guessing. No filling in the blanks. No “I knew what you meant.” - the children policed themselves, sometimes complete with budding lawyers wanting to jump in the fray to defend or procecute - and once delightfully one specual guy decided to argue aloud with himself.
One missing word could send the Robot straight into a wall of fire. The room filled with laughter, frustration, rewrites, and triumphant cheers. Without realizing it, the students were learning one of life's biggest lessons: mistakes aren't failures. They're feedback.
As she recalled years of Robot Day, Anne proudly boasted about one child who quietly discovered he was a brilliant programmer, the team that learned to laugh instead of argue, and the destination moment—when everyone realized the robot wasn't the one making mistakes. They were.
Four Thousand Years of Homework
Another favorite began when Anne stood at the front of the class and asked, “How long have kids been doing math homework?”
In her early years, she planned it two weeks before the fourth-grade trip to the Penn Museum, where the ancient Sumer homework assignment—the oldest one we know of—sits quietly inside an acrylic case, only a few miles from where her students sat. Later she relied on two keystones: a large color photograph folded in half so it could fit in the filing cabinet, and the time measurer.
“So how long…” Sometimes hands shot up. Sometimes there were only grumbles. “One hundred years?” “Five hundred?” “A thousand?” If the energy was too low—especially after lunch—she might need to fake an answer herself.
Nobody ever guessed the answer. When she had planned well, each student received chopsticks and a ball of playdough. Then came the keystone of the lesson: her time measurer, made from cereal-box cardboard and lots of tape.
She stretched it from the far corner of the room diagonally toward the door and explained that each inch represented a decade. With the full attention of the class, she walked her students backward through history—past their school, past their town, past the Declaration of Independence, past ancient empires, past Stonehenge. The tape measure just kept going.
Twenty feet. Twenty-five. Thirty. By the time they reached the end, they were standing in the hallway, looking at history—standing inside it.
Back at their seats, she held up that worn photograph of a small clay tablet—the same one behind glass at the Penn Museum. She asked what shapes they could make with their chopsticks. Students pressed wedge-shaped marks into playdough, writing numbers in cuneiform the way children did thousands of years ago.
Suddenly, math homework wasn't just homework anymore. It was a tradition shared across more than four thousand years of teachers and students—a powerful continuum.

After hearing stories like these, we realized something important. Teachers don't spend thirty years collecting lesson plans. They spend thirty years collecting moments. The lesson is only the invitation.

One Hundred Teachers Later
What began as a friendly meetup with a few retired teachers has grown into a community of nearly 100 retired teachers and education support professionals. Together, we're asking a simple question: what belongs in a library of wonder?
Not just worksheets. Not just activities. But the stories, tricks, adaptations, and hard-earned wisdom that made classrooms come alive. The little adjustments that survived rainy days, substitute teachers, forgotten supplies, and thirty wonderfully unpredictable children.
A Curious Side Quest
We were happily nerding out over a fancy mail merge when life did what it does best—it interrupted us with a much better idea. Which, if we're honest, is usually when the best learning begins.
We had started test-marketing Oops! Boxes with early elementary learners and special populations. Families loved them. Teachers who test-drove them reported students finding new ways to use them.
Then one student took a box to her mom, who was recovering in a rehab facility. Suddenly a retirement community asked, “Could you do these here?”
One afternoon we watched a room full of seniors laughing over a themed activity with the same spark we had seen in second graders. For a moment, the nursing home became electric. Different room. Different generation. Exactly the same curiosity.
Our Compass Check
So we're doing what great teachers do. We're listening to what the learners are teaching us. We're willing to pivot.
Because the goal was never to protect our original idea. The goal is to protect the moments that help people wonder, connect, laugh, discover, and remember that they're still capable of learning something new.
The Adventure Continues
It's a growing collection of classroom-tested wisdom, joyful mistakes, unforgettable questions, and human connection. Some of those treasures become Adventure Boxes for families. Some might become classroom resources. Some will find new life inside nursing homes and retirement communities.
Others haven't revealed where they belong yet. And we're okay with that.
Because if decades of great teachers have taught us anything, it's this: the best adventures rarely begin exactly as planned.
